چکیده

Complex Event Detection (CED) is emerging as a key capability for many monitoring applications such as intrusion detection, sensorbased activity & phenomena tracking, and network monitoring. Existing CED solutions commonly assume centralized availability and processing of all relevant events, and thus incur significant overhead in distributed settings. In this paper, we present and evaluate communication efficient techniques that can efficiently perform CED across distributed event sources. Our techniques are plan-based: we generate multi-step event acquisition and processing plans that leverage temporal relationships among events and event occurrence statistics to minimize event transmission costs, while meeting application-specific latency expectations. We present an optimal but exponential-time dynamic programming algorithm and two polynomial-time heuristic algorithms, as well as their extensions for detecting multiple complex events with common sub-expressions. We characterize the behavior and performance of our solutions via extensive experimentation on synthetic and real-world data sets using our prototype implementation.

Privacy-Preserving Distributed Event Correlation Thesis proposal

Event correlation is a widely-used data processing methodology for a broad variety of applications, and is especially useful in the context of distributed monitoring for software faults and vulnerabilities. However, most existing solutions have typically been focused on “intraorganizational” correlation; organizations typically employ privacy policies that prohibit the exchange of information o...

The Researches and Challenges of Complex Event Detection in Pervasive Computing

In pervasive computing environments, wide deployment of sensor devices has generated an unprecedented volume of atomic events. However, most applications such as healthcare, surveillance and facility management, as well as environmental monitoring require such events to be filtered and correlated for complex pattern detection. Therefore how to extract interesting, useful and complex events from...

A Framework for Object-Based Event Composition in Distributed Systems

Large-scale distributed systems benefit from new scalable communication mechanisms. In event-based publish/subscribe communication, components are either event sources that publish new events or event sinks that subscribe to events. Events can be seen as notifications that something of interest has happened in the system. Composite events represent complex patterns of activity from distributed ...

Event Processing across Edge and the Cloud for Internet of Things Applications

The rapid growth of sensing devices has opened up complex event processing (CEP) for real-time analytics in Internet of Things (IoT) Applications. While CEP has traditionally been centralized, the increasing capabilities of edge devices like smart phones, and the operational needs of low latency and privacy makes it desirable to use both edge and the Cloud for distributed CEP, the former often ...
